There were a few complaints, several years ago, about trespassing on property at the far end of the lake. With the increased number of anglers, rainbow trout catchables have replaced fingerling. Ravine Lake is a popular rainbow trout fishery with excellent survival of fish. Sampling in 2006 indicated an excellent population of catchable rainbow trout. Sampling in 2006 indicated an excellent population of catchable rainbow trout. Ravine Lake is scheduled for stocking 1,996 catchable rainbow trout for 2008; and 2,612 catchables for 2009-2012.

Previous to 1958, when Lower Bonnie Lake was stocked with 38,000 rainbow trout fingerling, Bonnie Lakes were barren of fish. Stocking with rainbow trout continued every year until 1967. Following stockings of RT were in 1968, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1986 and 1990. Arctic grayling were stocked for one year in 1969. Rainbow trout and Arctic graying populations are sustained with natural reproduction in the connecting stream between Lower and Upper Bonnie, and the outlet of Lower Bonnie. Lower Bonnie drains to the Chickaloon River by way of Sawmill Creek A falls several miles below Lower Bonnie, prevents any fish passage upstream. Currently no stocking is planned. If stocking were to occur, fish would have to be triploid (sterilized) all female rainbow trout, not able to spawn with the existing rainbow trout population.

On May 15th a Holland America Cruise Line representative will visit Palmer and The Glenn Highway Scenic Byway on a FAM trip provided by the Palmer Convention & Visitors Bureau. Hosted by Geri McCann, and her vision to see Palmer and the surrounding areas of The Glenn Highway Scenic Byway grow and prosper with economic development in Tourism. If we are selected as an area that the Holland America and Princess Cruise lines can market to their clients world wide, we are all in for a huge economic boost.

Not only will we provide visitors from all over the world a chance to experience an Alaska that up to now has never been experienced by tourists, we will grow as an international destination bringing with it, jobs, employment and a stability to a failing economy that has plagued many who live in rural area such as ours.

My hat is off to Geri McCann to her insight, vision, hard work against all odds to preserve and keep the light burning for all of us.

Join us, in her vision……The Palmer Convention and Visitors Bureau. To become a part of this wonderful opportunity we need your support.

Below is a letter of support you can sign and send to us, we welcome your ideas and look forward to a new beginning.

To The City of Palmer and Communities on The Glenn Highway Scenic Byway

We do not market ourselves self as a tourism destination as well as other communities do; as a result thousands of tourists come through our area in route to other destinations primarily for a nice rest stop instead of staying and spending.

We support the Palmer Convention and Visitors Bureau’s (PCVB) mission to change that image, and re-introduce Palmer and Communities on The Glenn Highway Scenic Byway as an exciting and enriching cultural/adventure tourism destination.

The PCVB is working hard to produce essential marketing tools such as; the Palmer Visitors Guide with regional attractions map, tourism website – (www.visitpalmer.org), and marketing the “Palmer Package” through FAMS, and booths at tourism related trade shows.

We are partnering with these efforts by joining the PCVB and encourage the City to collaborate with the PCVB by joining, purchasing advertisements, and providing additional funds and resources to assist in the production and distribution of the Palmer Visitor Guide and essential marketing tools crucial to launching Palmer as a premier tourism destination. The greater Palmer region is coming together to market itself as one dynamic package and Alaska’s prime tourism destination.

Please support the community and the PCVB efforts to promote tourism in Palmer and to communities along The Glenn Highway Scenic Byway. Help us get connected and intercept the tourism industry slipping through our fingers and town.

A Family Owned and Operated Mine

Usibelli Coal Mine, Inc. is a family owned business. Joe Usibelli Jr. is President of the corporation and his father, Joe Usibelli is Chairman of the Board of Directors. UCM is headquartered in Healy, Alaska, and has permitted reserves in excess of 30 years at current production rates. Additional surface mineable coal resource is under lease and available for expansion as needed. UCM will produce 1.5 million tons of sub bituminous coal this year and could easily double production if the market demanded. Coal is transported to six Interior Alaska electrical power plants – including three military sites: Fort Wainwright (U.S. Army), Eielson Air Force Base and Clear Air Force Station; Golden Valley Electric Association – Fairbanks’ electric cooperative; Aurora Energy – a wholesale supplier of electricity and provider of district heat in Fairbanks; and the University of Alaska Fairbanks power plant. Additionally, UCM has exported coal to South Korea through the Seward Coal Terminal at the Port of Seward since 1984. The current contract is for 500,000 metric tons each year during a three-year period. During 1998, a 20,000-ton shipment of UCM coal was delivered to Magadan in the Russian Far East, a potential market. Over the years, UCM has also provided test shipments to Taiwan, Japan, and Chile.

Restoration Update
We are presently working with the Bed Tax grant from 2008 to renovate the foundation of the building and correcting the sloping soils in the front lawn so moistures will drain away from the building. We continue to look for grants and donations to fund the complete re-wiring of the electrical system and plumbing throughout the structure. Once the renovations are completed it is our desire to use the building as a visitors center for the Glenn Highway, historical park business office and as a revenue source for the historical society. This structure has been identified in the Glenn Highway National Scenic Byway Interpretive plan for phase three renovations and kiosk installations. We ask for your support and donations as we move forward with this important project.

It is time to begin renovations in the park as described in the Glenn Highway National Scenic Byway Interpretive plan: Described as improvements to the existing park entrance signs, add signage for the rest areas and public restroom, assist in the O’Neill House renovations by improving accessibility , add or improve parking area to the southeast of the park, add a rack for brochures, create a kiosk with a historical park map and interpretive panels about the Park and Glenn Highway attractions in our area. These improvements will enhance traveler’s experiences as they tour the Glenn Highway and Matanuska
Valley.

State of AK Grant‐in‐Aid
In 2007 AHS was awarded a mini grant for a fossil exhibit cabinet to
display donated fossils and to create an outdoor exhibit from a
petrified tree that was donated by Dr. Linda Sloan and her late husband.
You will want to add this to your itinerary as you tour the Valley with your friends and family this summer.

The Coal Miners Ball is The Alpine Historical Society’s largest fund raising event of the year. It is designed to honor those that came before us with a Old Timers Induction to Hall of Fame, entertainment, a potlatch, dinner, dancing and door prizes.

The tax deductible contribution is $12.50 advance, $15.00 at the door, per person, children 5 and under free. Tickets include Dinner, induction, entertainment and door prizes. Doors open at 4PM.
